Computer skills to fight computer illiteracy

DIEPSLOOT - TECHNOLOGY is the future and not knowing how to use a computer will be the same as being unable to read and write today.

To address this challenge, Change the World Trust, a leading NGO in information technology skills development launched a new educational programme, Hour of Code at the Southern Sun Hotel near OR Tambo Airport.

In attendance were over 40 leaders from schools and NGOs such as Afrika Tikkun, Ikamva Youth and Siyakhula Computers. Attendees took part in an introduction and training workshop on how to teach the Hour of Code in their respective communities.

“The learners were taken through a series of hands-on practical tutorials to enable them to deliver this transformative programme to in-school and out of school youth, for whom the programme is designed,” said Marlin Madono of Change the World Trust.

The Hour of Code is fundamentally an hour-long introduction to computer science, created to teach computer coding through fun, interactive tutorials to show that anyone, anywhere can learn the basics. It was initially started in the United States in 2008 and, so far, over 100 million people worldwide from 180 countries have participated.

Attendee, Ziyaad Jina of Afrika Tikkun said, “All the kids in our organisation are eager and hungry to learn about computers, so the Hour of Code will not only help them develop higher level skills but, importantly, give them something to really bite into and change their lives.”
