Roads agency to investigate culvert erosion on Cumberland

BRYANSTON - FOLLOWING concerns raised about the erosion of soil around three culverts in Bryanston, the Johannesburg Roads Agency has promised to investigate the matter.

The concerns were raised by Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood who explained that the erosion around the culverts located along the Cumberland Bird Sanctuary had been going on for some time, and had likely been caused by rainfall.

“My main concern is that should there be more rainfall over the next few months, the road running over the culvert could potentially collapse and cause a catastrophe,” he said.

“It’s a major issue and seems to have been overlooked, but should this continue to go unchecked it could possibly lead to the road collapsing.”

Wood added that the agency had been alerted to the situation and had sent contractors to investigate, but nothing had come of it.

The agency’s Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “The design structure around the culverts was installed using an old system which was essentially not equipped to deal with a high volume of water.”

She confirmed that contractors would investigate the situation and come up with a suitable design to deal with the erosion.

“Some of the solutions [would] include installing gabion baskets around the culverts or backfilling it, but at this stage the main aim is to get our team on it to come up with a solution for the culverts,” she said.

Peters-Scheepers assured residents that the situation was not as dangerous as previously assumed, and stressed that it would be prioritised and effectively dealt with as soon as possible.

Residents could contact the agency’s call centre to report similar issues on 0860 562 874 or send an e-mail to hotline@jra.org.za
