School kicks off solidarity project to test teamwork

SANDTON - The French School, Lycée Jules Verne in Sandton, is developing a project of solidarity with its pupils and young underprivileged South Africans.

Teacher Emmanuel Selles said the project involved the climbing of Mount Kenya in January next year in partnership with the Denis Diderot French School in Nairobi.

Selles explained, “The goal is to link our school with the Children of the Dawn Association, a non-profit organisation based in Northriding, in order to work on a partnership. High mountains are an extreme environment where solidarity between mountain climbers on the same rope is a test of team spirit. Our goal is to enable a mixed group of students from Jules Verne and the Children of the Dawn Association to climb Mount Kenya.”

The project started with 33 pupils from Grade 9 to 11, including four children from the Children of the Dawn Association, reaching the summit of Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg.

Selles said, “United, motivated and focused, the students pushed their limits beyond the pain to reach the target. It was only possible to reach the top of the mountain thanks to the help of the volunteer adults, parents and teachers.”

The next step for the pupils is to climb Mont-Aux-Sources in the Drakensberg on 13 September this year.

People are encouraged to support the project and sponsor a child. This they can do by going to the school’s website for more information.
