Protecting SA’s Children

JOBURG - "Nobody wants their child to worry about food," says Annamart Viljoen

WORKING together to protect children has been the mantra of this year’s Child Protection Week, and Abraham Kriel Childcare (AKC) also did its part in alleviating hunger among children.

AKC used the week as a launchpad for their #Dare2Care social media campaign. The aim is to push members of the public to dare their friends, family members and colleagues to pledge a donation to the organisation, which goes towards AKC’s feeding schemes.

The organisation is based in Langlaagte and has satelite homes around Johannesburg. Their facilities protect children between birth and the age of 18 from abuse and neglect in the greater Johannesburg area, and also focuses on hunger alleviation.

Annamart Viljoen, spokesperson for AKC said, “Feeding a hungry child is a concrete way for members of the public to make a difference.”

Public awareness has been a key tool in providing for the basic needs of children under AKC’s care.

“Making people aware so that they commit to not forgetting tomorrow,” she said.

The week is celebrated annually in South Africa between 31 May and 7 June, and various other organisations spent the week raising awareness around the protection of children as set out by Section 28 of the South African Constitution.
