The incident resulted in one person sustaining injuries and many others shaken but unharmed.

Maria Gerondoudis explained how the incident unfolded, saying that she and her husband heard a thundering sound which was shortly followed by crashing and commotion.

“The whole passage along the bridge was filled with white dust and people [were] trying to establish what had just happened,” she said
“A structure containing steel, ceiling board and what looked like Perspex decorating the arch between the bridge and Sandton City had collapsed, injuring a 25-year-old female student.”

She added that the injured woman, allegedly from Buccleuch, was bleeding and sustained an open fracture to her leg.

Gerondoudis, a healthcare professional, managed to stabilise the victim while administering first aid to treat her injuries.

She commended the mall’s paramedic staff and another medic, Lisa, for assisting in treating the victim’s injuries before she was taken to hospital.

“Another thanks to the shop assistants who attempted to help by offering sugar water, even though a person in shock should consume nothing; and Sandton City security [who] were phenomenal in cordoning off the area quickly,” she said.

Gerondoudis concluded by stressing the importance of at least one person in any establishment or household knowing emergency first aid.

The story continues.
