Glass recycling hosts green dialogue

SANDTON - “THE industrial revolution is firmly behind us and we have now entered the sustainable revolution, and how we manage this revolution is what matters the most.”

These were the words of environmental capitalist, Jason Drew at the annual Green Dialogue hosted by The Glass Recycling Company in Sandton.

Drew was one of the guest speakers at the event and stressed the importance of introducing sustainability in all industries.

“We’re seeing a changing landscape in the various industries, such as technology, transport and how consumer products are being made,” he said.

“Nowadays the focus is more on reusability, the sharing of resources, and the ability to recycle such products rather than making products merely for profit.”

Drew added that it was important to use resources wisely as we live in a resource-constrained world, but added that inroads were being made in industries such as glass recycling.

His words were echoed by Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of the recycling company who highlighted the increase in glass recycling in South Africa since the company was launched in 2006.

“The latest figures released by our company show that the glass recycling rate for all glass packaging has increased to 40.9 percent in South Africa, a massive improvement from 18 percent in 2006,” he said.

Jhetam thanked South Africans for their commitment to recycling glass.

Also present at the dialogue was presenter and producer of the environmental TV programme, 50/50, Ntokozo Mbuli who emceed the event.
