Local authors speak up in Africa month

JOBURG – Thanks to the City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services, Joburg residents will be able to celebrate Africa month by asking their favourite local authors about the stories that inspired their greatest books.

A series of book talks will be hosted in celebration of Africa month and it kicked off with a talk by Stanley Bongwe, author of 100 Lessons in Diversity.

His book gives readers an insight into human nature and behaviour, and the author has captured the essence of human diversity in a practical, powerful and gentle manner.

Precious Mvulane, author of The Essential Finance Handbook for Business Owners, wrote her first book for start-up business owners, entrepreneurs and general managers explaining the basics of finance for those who need financial knowledge.

Those interested in starting their own business will want to listen to Thabang Molefi, author of Dollars to Soweto. She overcame the obstacles she faced growing up in Soweto to become an iridologist and ethno medical practitioner. She will speak at the Sandton Library from 7pm to 9pm on 28 May.

Lebo Pule, gender activist and social entrepreneur, will also be at the Sandton Library chatting about her book Alone. The book is described as a candid memoir by a girl who grew up in Sandton’s teeming Alexandra township and the story highlights a disturbing society which preys on its own young females. She will speak from 6pm to 8pm on 29 May.

Author Jackie Phamotse will discuss the topics of sugar daddies and their side chicks. Her book, Shattered Innocence is a semi-autobiography based on her own and others’ experiences and delves into the seemingly superficial world of having a relationship with a rich, married man. She will speak at the Sandton Library from 7pm to 9pm on 30 May.

Each one of these books and authors bring to light important issues facing South Africa. While some of them offer solutions, every one of them will get society talking.
