Joburg North schools invited to join chess league

JOBURG - Grayston Preparatory School was filled with excited pupils ready for the second Goforchess league which started on 12 May.

Goforchess is an organisation which convener Clyde Wolpe said specialises in chess education and gives pupils in Johannesburg North schools the opportunity to play competitively.

He added that although the league had a few organisational issues at the end of last year, the new cycle promises a great deal of progress with brand-new equipment and prizes from a variety of sponsors.

Matches will be held in the hall of Grayston Preparatory School and Wolpe invited all Northern Johannesburg schools to participate.

He said a great deal of interest has been shown in the league, with many schools being able to help their teams grow, adding a B and C division which gives more pupils the opportunity to play competitively.

The Goforchess league will lead to the implementation of the academy which will give the top players in the league a chance to better their skills at the end of the year.

Wolpe concluded, “What we want to do as coaches is develop competition, but we also want to bring up the top players and develop those players.”
