BREAKING NEWS: Shootout on M1; one arrested

SANDTON - There was a shootout on the M1 South near Grayston Drive on 20 May.

Sandton Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, who is on scene, confirmed that the incident was a shootout.

Provincial spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Sandton Police spotted the red Polo GTi. The police believed the vehicle to be suspicious. At the corner of Old Pretoria Road and Marlboro Drive the vehicle sped off and the police gave chase.

There was a shootout between the suspects and the police. The suspects sped off onto the M1 South highway and then lost control of the vehicle after the Grayston offramp.

One suspect alighted from the vehicle and fled on foot.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Danielle Dooley said the suspect who fled the scene attempted to hijack another vehicle.

The police searched the Polo and found a pistol and ammunition for an AK47.

The vehicle is suspected to have been stolen.

Dlamini said the arrested suspect will be charged with attempted murder and for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as a suspected stolen vehicle.

According to @PigSpotter an AK47 with ammunition as well as a camera with photos of a house has been found at the scene.

He added that a suspect has been arrested while one is still at large, having fled in a Red Polo.

Police sources said emergency services and the police K9 unit are now at the scene looking for the suspect.

Traffic is at a standstill on Grayston Drive. Motorists are urged to avoid if possible.
