Hyde Park corner hosts Rotary art festival

HYDE PARK - The Rotary art festival will be held at Hyde Park Corner from 28 May to 7 June.

With 55 artists on show and 500 carefully-selected artworks, this year’s Rotary art festival promises to satisfy any art enthusiast’s appetite. The official opening event will be held on 28 May from 6pm.

This year, special guest artists include Paul Botes, Vivien Budge, Abe Mathabe, Chrysoula Argyros, Dini Condy, Helen Day, Jane Sims, Robert Domijan and Sue Kemp. All of the professional artists participating are offering work of an extremely high standard with enough variety to satisfy every taste and budget. A wide range of art and techniques will also be featured at the event.

These include botanical, print, photography, miniature and water colour as well as artworks from The Bag Factory and the Figures & Form group.

“The 2015 festival promises to the biggest yet. Art lovers will also get an opportunity to participate in workshops and learn new techniques from various artists participating,” said Joan Sainsbury, the event organiser and curator.

The festival has grown significantly since it was first hosted at Inanda Club in 1993. Not only has the Rotary Club increased the number of days for the festival, but sales grew to 334 paintings from 50 artists with a value of R825 000 last year. This year, the Rotary Club aims to achieve more success with its stellar line-up of artists.

Participating artists agree to give a portion of their sales towards the Rotary Club of Rosebank to fund its many community projects. Last year these proceeds were donated to Hi Hopes, which provides support for families with hard-of-hearing infants, and offers youth development and leadership courses for more than 100 pupils from Alexandra. This year, the proceeds will go towards the same charities.

Viewing hours are from 9am to 9.30pm daily.
