State of the City is addressed

JOBURG - The State of the City Address (Soca) has commenced and the issue of youth and unemployment has been discussed.

Metro reporter Aphiwe Boyce is at the address which is taking place at the Civic Centre in Braamfontein, where a makeshift council chamber has been erected.

Mayor Parks Tau was ushered onto the premises at 11am and the address started with the sounds of the Imilonji choir singing the national anthem.

Speaker of the City, Connie Bapela acknowledged the guests at the address, and Tau wished all the city’s mothers a preemptive Happy Mother’s Day.

Tau then made the announcement that next year the City would launch the Vulindlela eJozi programme to create jobs for 200 000 unemployed youth.

“Only 13 percent of Joburg citizens have post post-matric education,” Tau said.

In terms of safety,  upgraded CCTV cameras have already been installed in the City which will detect suspicious criminal activities in a bid to fight crime.

Tau encouraged the City to save water where they can. The City will also install low flushing toilets to try and save water.

Twitter was abuzz with Joburgers commenting on Soca.

The address continues.
