Petition to better secure substations gains momentum

SANDTON - With over 200 signatures garnered thus far, a petition started in various suburbs to get City Power to upgrade the security measures around substations is fast gaining traction.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter, said the petition began as a result of frustration with the vulnerability of substations. He added that the lack of security negatively affected residents as it resulted in expensive losses due to power surges.

“Residents have lost equipment such as TVs, gate motors, alarms etc due to the surges through their property [and these] losses are not covered by the City or City Power, leaving residents very frustrated,” he said.

Potter added that prior to launching the petition, various attempts had been made to engage with the City on the issue, however, no long-lasting solution had been brought forward.

The only solution by the City was to replace the damaged or missing locks with the same type of locks on the substations, an act he said was futile.

“We cannot continue like this, we need new solutions. You cannot expect a different solution if you keep doing the same thing. That doesn’t work,” Potter stressed.

He concluded by saying that the petition would run for a few more weeks before being handed over to the City for consideration.
