Wits SRC president under fire after expressing admiration for Hitler

JOBURG - Mcebo Dlamini, University of the Witwatersrand's SRC president, has come under heavy fire from the public and members of the university after expressing his admiration for Adolf Hitler on Facebook.

Social media has been buzzing since yesterday, after Wits’ SRC president posted a Facebook status in admiration of the late dictator, Adolf Hitler.

Since the comment was posted to Facebook, various rights’ groups and organisations including the South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS) have expressed their disappointment in Dlamini.

Furthermore, SAUJS has appealed to Wits’ to remove Dlamini from his position as SRC president.

Dlamini was contacted for an interview with ANN7 to explain himself, during which he was very unapologetic and reinforced that he loved Hitler, however, the comment that he made was taken out of context.

He explains that the admiration he has for Hitler was for his charisma and ability to rally people together.

Dlamini also stated in the Facebook comment that all Caucasian people have some ‘Hitler’ in them.

During the interview, he said he did not aim to be taken as racist or anti-Semitic, and rather wanted to spark debate in South Africa.

He also makes comments about Caucasian South Africans and how they have enforced their opinions on black South Africans, but he feels that the black majority of the country should not be forced into having the same views.

“The white people make us love those that they love, and make us hate those that they hate,” said Dlamini in his social media statuses.

“They want to make their enemies, our enemies – it can’t be.”

Vice Chancellor of Wits, Adam Habib, condemns the comments made by Dlamini and has referred him for investigation into whether disciplinary charges should be brought against him.
