Exposing the dangers of drinking

JOBURG - Eden Recovery Centre in Glenferness spread the word about alcohol abuse during Alcohol Awareness Month.

The month of April is observed as Alcohol Awareness Month and the recovery centre urged the public to consider the warning signs of alcoholism and the consequences of binge drinking during this time.

According to Adrienne Dodds of the centre, some of the warning signs of alcohol abuse are drinking alone when you feel angry or sad, being late for work or events because of drinking, not being able to stop consuming alcohol, forgetting things you did or said while drinking and getting headaches and hangovers after drinking.

Some of the side-effects of excessive drinking could be distorted vision and hearing, impaired judgement, anaemia and blackouts.

Some of the long-term effects of binge drinking could include dysfunctional relationships, high blood pressure, strokes, liver disease, nerve damage, ulcers, malnutrition and cancer of the mouth and throat.

During April, Eden Recovery Centre encouraged the public to talk to family members about problems they may be having with alcohol abuse, avoid over consumption of alcohol at social gatherings, check that their local outlets observe the legal drinking age limit, know the effects of alcohol when pregnant and recognise if they are drinking too much.
