No end to grass woes for Kelvin residents

KELVIN - Residents have expressed frustration recently about the ongoing issue of unkempt grass in the area.

Residents are accusing Johannesburg City Parks of failing to properly maintain a sidewalk on Cone Way, with one resident saying that it has been an ongoing battle for the past three years to get the entity to maintain it.

“We constantly have to badger City Parks to deal with the issue, and the previous time we got through to them, it took eight months for them to [finally] cut the grass,” the frustrated resident said.

He added that having the sidewalk in such a state was a health and safety hazard because it attracts rodents and, in winter, the uncut grass dries up and causes fires.

Compounding the problem is an abandoned property, which was allegedly a nursery, which remains unkempt and closed off and without any entity claiming responsibility for its upkeep.

Jenny Moodley, spokesperson at City Parks, confirmed that the entity was aware of the situation in Kelvin and would take steps to remedy it.

“A request for horticultural services has been scheduled and will be concluded by 17 April,” she said.

“Furthermore, sidewalk maintenance is undertaken only in areas where residents are not maintaining the verges adjacent to their properties or businesses and is carried out on an ‘as and when required’ basis.”

Moodley added that the property in Kelvin is not owned or maintained by the entity and appealed to residents, wherever possible, to take up the maintenance of sidewalks adjacent to their homes.

She concluded by saying that any concerns or problems identified by residents should be reported to Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874.
