The launch of the new Ducati Scrambler

RIVONIA – Good vibrations. good, clean fun, self-expression and freedom is what the new Ducati Scrambler, a contemporary 803cc twin cylinder motorcycle recently launched in South Africa by Ducati Johannesburg, will offer.

The launch was hosted at the Barnyard Theatre on 15 April and comes highly anticipated after the international launch took place in November last year in Colorado, USA. It was promoted as a rather casual affair and attendees were treated to a song and dance show by the theatre’s talented cast before the big unveil, which was by contrast, nothing less than spectacular.

Sparks flew, fireworks shot up and as the lights slowly lit up the stage and the Beach Boys crooned about surfing in the USA over the speakers, the scrambler range stood there in its full, retro-styled glory.

“The scrambler is a fun bike,” said Johnny Araujo, head of Ducati South Africa. “The theme of the range is just fun. Fun, fun and more fun.”

Based on the original scrambler which Ducati produced from 1963 to 1975, it is not a conventional scrambler in modern standards, hence the vintage-looking panelling and the wide handle bars. It only produces 75hp, which means that it can’t travel at break-neck speeds, making it more of a leisure commuter than a racing machine.

“It doesn’t go very fast,” said guest speaker Donovan Fourie from Bike SA Magazine, who also attended the international launch. “It doesn’t need to because it’s not made for serious bike racing. It’s all about light-hearted, good, clean fun.”

Ducati was recently acquired by Porsche South Africa in Fourways, which is headed by Fourways resident Tobie Venter, who also recently purchased the Kyalami Race Track in order to preserve its historic motor sporting history.
