World’s first disability talent competition set to hit Mzansi

JOBURG - The world’s first disability talent competition is set to hit Johannesburg.

The competition is being hosted by the Yes You Can Motivation fraternity, which focuses on youth and disability development while integrating abled and disabled-bodied.

Yes You Can Fraternity serves to unearth gifted disabled individuals, giving them the opportunity to walk away with prizes valued at R200 000.

The competition should be regarded as an awareness campaign for disabled people with extraordinary talent. The show is dedicated to celebrating individuals and their talents, and to solidarity with those not provided equal opportunities.

It should not be regarded as alienating any disabled person from any other competitions available, or as creating a platform that wishes to promote antagonism, separation or discord.

The competition is supported by the National Council for Persons with Physical Disability in SA, the National Institute for the Deaf, Down Syndrome South Africa, the Institute for the Blind, and South African Federation for Mental Health.

It will be the first of its kind on national TV, as there is no age limit, no disability limit and no ethnicity, race or gender discrimination.

The competition will span across seven cities; Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Durban, George, and Mafikeng. The completion boasts an array of talent categories including acting, presentation, poetry, music, singing, instrumental, DJ, stand-up comedy, stage magic, circus skills, impersonations, dancing, sport, show jumping, and extreme motor sport.

Executive Producer of the competition, Helga Barkhuizen, will be accompanied by fellow judges Armand du Plessis, the current Mr South Africa 2014, Achmat Hassiem, a South African Paralympic Gold Medallist, and a still-to-be-revealed surprise judge.

People interested in participating should complete an entry form on the website and submit a 30 second clip of their selected performance. Contestants will be notified via e-mail or telephone whether they have in fact been successful. Entries close on 31 May.
