Deteriorating state of affairs in Bryanston

BRYANSTON - Residents are concerned about the deteriorating state of affairs developing outside the Pikitup Bryanston Garden Refuse Site at the corner of Ballyclare Drive and Hobart Street in Bryanston.

Jacqueline Brook, one of the concerned residents is said, “The area is used as a site for human waste. People are also sleeping in the dip next to the dump site alongside William Nicol Drive, and that area is also openly used as a toilet.”

David Mahlangu the regional manager for the Marlboro Depot said Pikitup can only control the situation inside their premises, and not outside.

“Unfortunately Pikitup can’t enforce the law because enforcement becomes the Metro police’s responsibility,” he added.

However, Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp, believes Pikitup ought to take more responsibility for the dire situation outside their site.

“Just as the City expects residents to keep their pavements clean and tidy, and encourages beautification of pavements, the residents expect the same from Pikitup,” he said.

“Pikitup needs to secure and clean up their own pavement outside the garden site. This means that they should not be waiting for complaints but that Pikitup should also report illegal activities taking place along their boundary wall to the Metro police.”

The boundary walls of the site show evidence of fires, as well as people urinating, sleeping and hanging their washing on the pavement around the site.

“The community cannot accept that it is their responsibility to clean up around a city owned property,” explained Earp. “We need to be proactive, clean and maintain the area around the city owned properties.”

Another concerned resident, Anita Canada, said in a previous story that the situation at the site was getting worse by the day.

“Could everyone work together on this and put pressure on those responsible. I do hope that Pikitup takes responsibility for their site and takes all the necessary steps to secure it. The Metro police need to regularly patrol the area.”

No comment was received from the Metro police by the time of publication.
