Ants in my pants!

JOBURG - Residents in the greater Johannesburg area have been experiencing an influx of these little creepy crawlies in their homes.

However, it is noted that ants mainly appear or surface on the cusps of season changes, specifically the change from summer into autumn.

According to BASF Pest Control Solutions South Africa, a pest control company, there are two main pest species found in our homes; the black or garden Ant (Lasius niger) and the Pharoah’s Ant (Monomorium pharaonis). They both cause a nuisance as they travel widely in search of food, following trails and clustering around the food source.

Additionally, ants hibernate and seek refuge in our homes to hide away from the cold weather. This is why we experience an invasion of these little buggers whenever we drop a crumb or leave something out during the colder months.

The company stressed that Pharaoh’s Ants pose the biggest health risk. As they often feed in unhygienic areas such as drains and bins, they can easily transmit pathogens, an infectious agent that causes disease or illness to its host.

Some of the Caxton Joburg North employees shared some home remedies to heed invasions:

  • Cayenne pepper

Sprinkle cayenne pepper near the opening where ants enter your home. This is the most effective natural repellent.

  • Table salt

This is the safest remedy to keep ants away. Make a line, a circle or any shape to prevent them from crossing the designated area of salt.

  • Cucumber peels

Cucumber peels can be used as an excellent ant repellent. Put them in the areas affected by ants and you will notice that they will disappear in no time.

  • Vinegar

Vinegar, apple vinegar or normal white vinegar can be efficient in killing ants. Due to its fungicidal and insecticidal properties, vinegar helps to eradicate ants.

  • Homemade Ant Powder

Sprinkle tartar cream, chilli powder, powdered chalk, powdered cleanser, talcum powder and cinnamon thoroughly in affected areas. Ants can never enter these areas since the smell is so powerful.
