Recovering from Easter with World Health Day

JOBURG - Today is World Health Day, and what better way to raise awareness of this important day than by returning to normal life with a healthy detox after the fatty, chocolate-filled Easter weekend.

The theme for World Health Day 2015 is food safety.

More than 2 million people lose their lives each year due to the consumption of unsafe food carrying harmful bacteria and viruses.

These viruses and bacteria have been linked to many illnesses including food poisoning, diarrhea and even some forms of cancer.

Many of the dangerous substances that appear in food are as a result of new methods of packaging that are meant to make the process faster and make the food item last longer.

It is for this reason that the World Health Organisation is promoting food safety this year and has compiled a list of ways that you can ensure the safety of your food and protect your family.

The first key to keeping your food safe is to keep it and yourself clean. Always wash your hands, as well as fruits and vegetables, before you cook or eat.

The second tip is to separate raw and cooked food when preparing meals, in order to prevent contamination.

Raw food can cause bacteria to grow in your stomach, so the third tip is to make sure that food is cooked thoroughly.

Tip four is to store foods at the correct temperature as stated on the labels.

The fifth and final way to keep food safe is to use safe water to wash food and cook with.

Keep yourself and your family safe and raise awareness about food safety this World Health Day.
