Epilepsy champion starts a fundraiser initiative

PARKMORE - A Parkmore Scout, Maximilian van Heerden (11) is running an epilepsy awareness campaign at his new school.

Van Heerden’s first campaign was at his former school Bryneven Primary School in Bryanston, and now he is taking his campaign to Deutsche International Schule Johannesburg in Parktown to highlight World Epilepsy Purple Day in June.

He has briefed his peers about the importance of raising awareness about epilepsy and informed them of a raffle fundraiser initiative that he will be running until World Epilepsy Week in the first week of June.

The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Reea Epilepsy Care Centre where he is a volunteer.

Van Heerden’s mother, Tania said his intention was to raise funds for repairs to the greenhouse at the centre as it was an educational centre for children to study botany.

She added that for the raffle prizes, Sterkinekor has donated 15 vouchers, and Nestlé has offered a box of Kit Kat chocolates. There is also a R6 000 voucher from Incredible Connection and Wristbands SA will sponsor 1 200 purple wristbands which will serve as tickets for the raffle. Spur has also offered meal vouchers.
