Residents remove illegal ads in Buccleuch

BUCCLEUCH - Following the introduction of new bylaws to curb outdoor advertising, Buccleuch residents took to the streets to rid the suburb of illegal posters and banners.

The operation was spearheaded by the Buccleuch Steering Committee, and saw the removal of illegal signposts on trees, traffic signs and streetlight poles, which were handed over to the authorities.

The new bylaws state that illegal outdoor advertising will be classified as a serious crime and in the same category as the hijacking of buildings.

Committee member Johan Swanevelder said the successful operation took place on 29 March with the assistance of community members and security personnel.

“On Sunday morning, the committee in conjunction with Saber Tactical and with the blessing of the relevant authorities performed illegal signage removal in the streets, with volunteers splitting up into functional teams of two and driving around and removing these illegal signs,” he said.

He added that around 150 illegal signs were removed and handed over to Metro police’s bylaw management unit for processing.
