St David’s Marist Inanda uses art to raise awareness against bullying

SANDTON - As part of St David’s Marist Inanda’s Human Rights and Anti-Bullying Week, the pupils at the school participated in various awareness initiatives involving the use of art.

Pupils drew pictures and produced posters illustrating the various forms of bullying. The senior art pupils took part in a pavement art project to raise their awareness. The seniors were tasked with producing work in chalk on the paving in the school grounds working under the themes of gender violence and stereotyping, cyber-bullying and verbal abuse.

They approached their artworks with quickness, and soon had images that amazed their peers and generated much discussion about the issues of bullying, abuse and social exclusion.

The school thanked teachers Shamani Pillay and Catharine van der Zwan for including the art department in the week’s programme, and also to the boys who participated, and made moving, engaging art.

The Grade 10 pupils who participated were Diogo Barradas, Rupert Hartmann, Jared Land, Joshua Mvunga, Matteo Osato, Kingsley Rowe and Thomas Walsh. The Grade 11 pupils were Daniel Bregman-Frangos, Johsua Malpage and Maxie Pirikisi. The Grade 12 pupils were Nathan Michlo, Dylan Richards and Paul Richardson.
