Evictions loom for displaced Alex residents

MARLBORO - Weeks after displaced residents from Alexandra were placed at the Marlboro Sports Centre, it has emerged that there are plans to remove them from the facility.

This is according to a notice issued by the City of Johannesburg’s housing division which gave the displaced residents notice of termination from the centre. It was stated that the centre was urgently required by the Sports and Recreation Department to use as a sports facility.

Furthermore, the displaced residents were given until 23 March to move from the centre and return to their previous residential areas to allow for the “undisturbed possession of this facility to the department”.

The displaced residents were temporarily placed at the centre following an agreement with the City of Joburg to allow them temporary accommodation.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police confirmed that the residents were given until 23 March to move out, and that they would be informed by 24 March if they should remove the residents from the centre.
