VIDEO: South Africa’s top dogs

FOURWAYS – Animal lovers from far and wide gathered at the Indaba Hotel for the Animaltalk Top Dog 100 Ratings for a chance to view South Africa’s best thoroughbred canines.

Invitees were treated to a three course gala lunch while managing director of Animaltalk magazine, Urs Honneger recognised the achievements of the top show dogs in the country, with accolades going to the dogs which had scored the most points during the course of last year.

“Today was a fantastically successful day,” said editor of Animaltalk magagzine, Johann Theron who came all the way from Cape Town to attend the prestigious event. “It was great for all of us from Animaltalk to see all these wonderful dogs here, for they are the canine superstars of South Africa’s dog world.”

Theron added that this was not only a great way for the dogs to show off their excellence, but also for the dog owners to get the recognition they deserved. “Dog showing is hard work. It’s expensive with all the travelling involved to get to different shows. Thus it’s a big achievement to be part of the top 10.”

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the bi-annual show, and funds were also raised for the South African Guide Association for the Blind.

Herewith a list of South Africa’s top show dogs:

1. Danny the shih tzu, owned by Riekie Erwee.

2. Spies the Afghan hound, owned by Clair van den Bergh.

3. Frazer the Great Dane, owned by Leigh Beckman.

4. Quillan the Irish wolfhound owned by Bridget Harmer.

5. Finn the Maltese owned by Heidi Rolfes.
