The importance of managing our water resources

JOBURG - It is no secret that there is an ever increasing demand for water, so during National Water Week it is important to consider ways to save and manage water responsibly and adopt these habits into your everyday lifestyle.

National Water Week runs from 17 to 23 March, with International Water Day falling on 22 March.

African Utility Week event director, Evan Schiff emphasised that every drop counts as our water resources dwindle and slowly disappear.

One of the most important resources, there has been an increase in demand due to economic growth in the past years, resulting in increased urbanisation, population growth and a higher demand to improve and expand water infrastructure.

“Once again at the 15th African Utility Week taking place in Cape Town from 12-14 May, the water conference track offers an exciting spectrum of speakers on the state of the water industry today with both local and global experts sharing their success stories and valuable lessons,” explained Schiff.

Klaus Gruebl, country manager of Sensus in South Africa said, “Currently in South Africa, we have a water loss of around 38 percent, but we believe it is possible to reduce the loss by up to 20 percent.”

Iin order to preserve this precious resource, it is important for South Africans to make a conscious effort to identify the ways in which they waste water on a personal, business, corporate and industrial level and devise ways to counter it.

The 15th African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa is expected to again attract more than 5 000 attendees and features 250 exhibitors, 190 speakers, eight conferences, free technical workshops on the expo floor, three high-profile plenary sessions and the coveted industry awards gala dinner.

During the African Utility Week Industry Awards, the African Water Utility of the Year, will also be announced.
