No cars in Sandton’s transport master plan

SANDTON - The city council is getting ready to introduce a carless transport master plan.

This according to City of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau who spoke on Talk Radio 702 on 18 March about the promotion of public transport in Sandton. He said traffic congestion in the area had increased significantly and the Sandton transport master plan aims to introduce alternative eco-friendly travel methods and to make public transport in Sandton easily accessible.

The City aims to start introducing the new transport system during Transport Month in October. Tau said as part of the City’s commitment to change the travelling habits of Sandton commuters, they would be hosting an EcoMobility Festival during October.

For the entire month of October parts of the Sandton CBD will be closed to car use and instead, commuters will utilise the lanes for public transport, walking, cycling and other forms of eco-mobility.

“We want to show people that there are other means of transport to access Sandton,” said Tau.
