UPDATE (VIDEO): Protest march disrupts traffic on Sandton Drive

SANDTON - Sandton Drive has been closed off from Rivonia Road due to a protest march about police brutality.

Edna Mamonyane from the Metro police said protesters were delivering a memorandum to the US Consulate.

Some of the roads affected include north of Sandton Drive as well as Sandton Drive between Fifth Street and Rivonia Road towards Parkmore.

She added that the march has been approved by officials and approximately 100 people are taking part. She said some of the protesters are from the United Front of Workers.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, the spokesperson for the Sandton police added that the protesters are protesting against the killings of civilians by the police in the United States of America. “There is no violence, everything is under control and it is a peaceful march,” he said.

The South African Police Service, as well as Metro police, are controlling traffic and watching over the proceedings outside the consulate.

Journalist Andrei van Wyk, said the memorandum addresses police brutality in the United States of America and calls on justice for the lives lost during the Marikana massacre.

A representative of the protesters, Trevor Ngwane has been chosen to hand over the memorandum to officials at the consulate. The protesters are expected to depart at 1.30pm today (18 March).
