Thief posing as domestic worker nabbed

PARKMORE - Security company, ADT urged residents to ensure that their domestic staff were equipped with panic buttons in the event of a robbery.

This follows an incident in Parkmore when a thief, allegedly impersonating a domestic worker, was apprehended by ADT members during a robbery.

“I encourage residents to speak to their domestic staff about the importance of carrying their panic button at all times,” said Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT central region.

Humphrey also stressed the importance of teaching employees how to arm and disarm the alarm and the importance of having a safe room, equipped with a door, a telephone and panic button, that can be used in an emergency.

“We commend the resident for quickly alerting ADT and our officers for their prompt response to this emergency, which resulted in the apprehension of an armed suspect and police arrest.”

Other tips include:

  • Your perimeter is your first line of defence. Ensure you have it properly secured with walling, palisade or other secure structures.
  • Keep doors and security gates locked.
  • Arm outdoor detection when you are indoors.
  • Ensure you have references and copies of ID of all domestic staff on your property and don’t hire people off the street.
  • Report anything suspicious to your security company or the police immediately.
  • Talk about security and safety issues with your domestic worker and/or gardener.
