Metro police assault woman at Sandton Police Station

SANDTON - Nontsikelelo Malindi was allegedly assaulted by Metro police inside the Sandton Police Station.

She said she was stopped by Metro police at a roadblock in Sandton and asked to take a breathalyser test. “I requested a clean pipe to blow into but the Metro’s were not too happy and said I think I know a lot, but eventually they gave me a clean one,” she said.

She blew into the breathalyser test three times and the test did not pick up any alcohol intake. On her way back to her car the Metro police called her back. “I went back and one of them requested that I test again and I obliged but this time it beeped,” said Malindi.

She said things got out of control after they took her to the Sandton Police Station. “My argument to the Metro police officer was why she didn’t take the first three readings,” said Malindi. “What if she had the machine rigged whilst I was walking back to the car? She got really angry and started hurling insults.”

Malindi said she was then assaulted by the Metro officers, and her clothes were ripped and torn. “I was handcuffed, dragged and pulled across the floor, slapped and kicked by the Metro police whilst the other police officers stood by and watched,” she explained. “No one tried to stop the Metro police and I was dragged into a private room where the assault escalated.”

She added that she was pinned down to have her blood drawn and no one showed her the needle they were using. Malindi was detained until she was bailed the next morning.

“I can confirm that a case of common assault was opened and is being investigated,” said Captain Kym Cloete, the spokesperson for the Sandton police.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar said the case had been escalated to the head of internal affairs for investigation.
