Sandton police spokersperson, Captain Kym Cloete, stressed the seriousness of the situation, saying that smash and grabs are an ongoing problem in the area.
“[The] community must please remain alert [as] the trend currently is that suspects focus on busy intersections during afternoon peak traffic and often target people who are alone in their vehicles,” she said.
Cloete further urged motorists to keep their valuables out of sight because if the suspects can’t see anything, then they will not be tempted to break the window.
She also urged motorists to remain aware of jamming devices used by criminals at shopping centres, petrol stations and primary schools.
“Check your vehicle manually to ensure that it really is locked and verify which shopping centres have the alarms which activate should a jamming device be used,” Cloete said.
