UPDATE: Alexandra Taxi Association lead William Nicol Drive dispute

BRYANSTON - The taxi route dispute on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston subsided with the arrival of Metro and Sandton police on 26 February.

Spokesperson for Metro police, Edna Mamonyane said police arrived to settle the dispute which involved drivers from different taxi associations fighting over the use of William Nicol Drive.

She said it is alleged that members of the Alexandra Taxi Association were arguing with taxis commuting to Diepsloot and demanded that they use the freeway and not William Nicol Drive.

Mamonyane added that the early morning argument has been linked to an incident involving a taxi driver who was knocked over and killed on William Nicol Drive in Hyde Park, and another taxi which was stoned on William Nicol Drive near Grosvenor Road on the afternoon of 25 February.

Many taxi drivers parked their vehicles on the side of William Nicol Drive by Ballyclare Drive on the morning of 26 February and it was believed they were planning to settle a route dispute, however Sandton and Metro police were on the scene to prevent an outbreak of violence.

Spokesperon for the Metro Police Edna Mamonyane  said, “We have received information about alleged taxi violence in Bryanston and have sent officer to the scene to investigate further.”

Mamonyane added that the police have also been notified and were sent to investigate.

This comes after a taxi driver was knocked over and killed on William Nicol Drive by Hyde Park and another taxi was stoned on William Nicol Drive by Grosvenor Road on the afternoon of 25 February.

It is believed that taxi drivers from different associations were in a dispute over routes along William Nicol Drive.

Some community members took to Twitter on the morning of 26 February to report that they saw taxi drivers on the side of William Nicol Drive by Bryanston High School throwing stones and carrying sjambocks. However, when Sandton Chronicle attended the scene, the taxi drivers were calm and Sandton police were on standby.

Metro police were also seen stopping taxi drivers on 11th Street in Parkmore to check licences, but it is unclear whether this was related to the Bryanston incident.
