Non-stop mystery stench in Wendywood

WENDYWOOD - Concerned resident Wayne Gordon is convinced there is a sewage leak into the Sandspruit River next to St Francis Drive in Wendywood Ext 4.

Gordon has been complaining about the stench since last year. Even though Joburg Water had informed Gordon that there was no leak, he is convinced that the smell is from a sewage leak.

“The sewage smell from the spruit has started up again, and I cannot get hold of the right person to tackle this problem,” he said.

“I am not sure if others can smell it, but it is bad over here so I am tackling the issue again.”

Gordon said when Joburg Water attended to the problem last year, he was notified that manhole cover needed to be replaced. He said Joburg Water found that this was the only source that could be linked to the reported smell.

“The smell decreased remarkably after that but never actually went away,” he explained. “It can be smelt in the late afternoons.”

Gordon said the smell has once again become overpowering. He said it continues throughout the night and is present in the mornings as well.

“I would like to be more involved in helping to keep our living areas safe and clean for our children,” he said.

Gordon added that he has been desperately trying to get a hold of his ward councillor, Lillian Kekane of Ward 109, without success.

No comment was received from the ward councillor and Joburg Water by time of publication.
