Bringing technology into the classroom

JOBURG - Bryanston was bustling with technology-hungry teachers from all over South Africa, who gathered for the very first African iPad summit at the Forum on 16 February.

Hosted by South African Apple distributor, Core Group, the event was used as a platform for teachers to learn and share their experiences with regards to the use of iPads in the classroom, and its many benefits in helping the learning process.

Spokesperson for Core Group Mbali Zondo said, “The iPad summit creates a platform in bringing local and international educators together to share their experiences and insights on how to ensure that the iPad enhances teaching practices, empowers teachers and engages pupils.”

The event saw speakers Tom Daccord, Beth Holland and Sabba Quidwai, all of whom have done technologically-enhanced education, give talks on the benefits of the tablet in the classroom as a tool for learning, sharing and improving creativity.

Michelle Lissoos of iSchoolAfrica, an initiative which reaches under-resourced rural and township schools by giving them access to iPads for educational purposes, said the event was not just about the technology that the country has access to, but the ways in which these technologies benefit the pupils.

She added, “All teachers, students, schools and universities deserve the best technology… But it is not about superimposing these technologies into the system, but rather bringing transformation.”

The demand for the technological advancement with the iPad in the classroom has grown with EdTechTeacher co-founder, Tom Daccord, saying that many schools have undertaken pilot programmes and have asked to upgrade their teaching processes. He said the use of tablet devices in the classroom adds many different elements to learning.
