Grayston window washers nabbed

JOBURG - Following the implementation of Operation Ke Molao (It's the Law) on 12 February the Metro police have removed 53 beggars, including window washers on Grayston Drive, from Johannesburg's streets.

The operation involves Metro police in marked and unmarked cars monitoring intersections and off-ramps around Johannesburg in an attempt to combat the increase in hijacking, smash-and-grab incidents and vehicle window washing.

Chief Superintendent of the Metro police Wayne Minnaar said, “We rounded 53 people off the streets on 12 February. All were either beggars, street traders or window washers.”

Minnaar said one blind beggar and another in a wheelchair were taken off the street and taken to the nearest shelter by the Department of Social Development, while the window washers and illegal street traders were processed at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

He concluded that the first day of the operation was a great success.
