Avoiding smash and grabs

JOBURG - There are many theories doing the rounds about what to do and what not to do to avoid smash and grabs, which have become a serious, frequent problem across the city.

This reporter decided to do some investigations and see which ones are true and which ones are false…

  • Many motorists are confused about whether to close or leave their window open a little

According to Arrive Alive, if you don’t have smash-and-grab film installed, leave your window slightly open (approximately 3cm, but less than 5cm) whilst driving. This makes the windows more flexible and resistant to shattering if they are struck by a sharp object.

  • Many motorists believe that you should be as close as possible to the car in front of you at an intersection

But according to the Johannesburg Metro Police, motorists should keep a good distance so that they are able to drive away if they are threatened.

  • Some motorists carry weapons in their cars to protect themselves when being attacked

Johannesburg Metro Police officer Lina Magahedi said, “As much as drivers want to protect themselves, we do not promote that as it will cause road rage.”

  • Some criminals throw eggs on windscreens to force drivers to stop

Recent research by a Caxton journalist found that if you use your wipers it makes it worse. Drivers are advised to not use their wipers and to continue on to a filling station to get it cleaned up.
