10111 flooded with hoax calls

JOBURG  - Gauteng 10111 is asking residents to give correct information when making 10111 calls.

10111’s spokesperson Captain Pinky Tsinyane said a lot of prank calls come through from people who abuse the police service.

She said, “We have noted a lot of abusive, hoax and prank calls that are made by both children and adults. This type of behaviour is making it difficult for the public who need police assistance urgently to get help.”

She firmly stated that police condemn those abusive, hoax and prank calls because they may even cost lives. “When the public members call the emergency number responsibly lives will be saved, more crimes will be prevented and more suspects will be arrested,” said Tsinyane.

Tsinyane said 10111 call takers and dispatchers will ensure that residents’ complaints are registered and dispatched. She said it is important for people to be calm, speak clearly and slowly when calling the emergency number so that the operator can provide faster assistance.

Residents are urged to teach children their home address and contact numbers. “It helps when callers can provide the description of the nearest landmarks such as post office, shops or clinics close to the place where the incident took place.”
