Pillay case postpones once again

RANDBURG - A calm Yengesen Pillay appeared at Randburg Magistrates' Court on the morning of 9 February, only for the case to go through another postponement.

Pillay is currently in custody in the medical section of the Johannesburg prison facing a murder charge following the death of a woman identified by the police as Shareen Pillay and believed to be his wife.

His appearance followed numerous postponements since his initial court date on 20 August last year where the court approved an application for Pillay to undergo a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Sterkfontein Hospital. This was to determine whether he was fit to stand trial in terms of the Mental Health Act sections 77 and 78. It was revealed on 9 February that the accused was number 55 on the waiting list for a bed at the hospital. The case was then postponed until 12 March.

Pillay was arrested, on the run, in Pietermaritzburg on 19 August last year. He was unable to appear in court on 20 August after he attempted to commit suicide while under police custody.

The victim’s lifeless body was discovered by a passing motorist outside an office complex just off of Peter Place Road in Bryanston with about 50 stab-wounds. ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaark, said the deceased was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He added that she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after sustaining substantial blood loss.
