Two arrested in attempted hijacking on Summit Road

SANDTON - A suspect and two members of the public sustained injuries in an attempted hijacking and accident on the corner of Summit Road and Kelvin Drive on the afternoon of 3 February.

Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete explained that Sandton police officers tried to stop and search the four suspects on the corner, believing that they were suspicious. Cloete said the tried to flee and attempted to hijack a nearby car. The suspects also fired shots at the police.

Police officers intercepted the suspects and apprehended two of them.

She said there were no fatalities but one suspect was wounded by a gunshot and one member of the public was injured during an accident caused by the attempted hijacking. Another member of the public was assaulted by the suspects in the attempted hijacking.

Cloete said the injured suspect was however taken to the hospital in order for the gunshot wound to be treated.

She warned motorists to avoid the area and said traffic was also building up on the corner of Rivonia Road and Kelvin Drive due to the crime scene.
