The man, identified as Yannen Feng, pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful possession of the horn after he was caught in Sandton with the 1.5kg horn in a bag. Feng admitted guilt and accepted the sentence handed down of R40 000 at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 26 January.
In handing down the sentence, Magistrate Deon Schnetler commented on the seriousness of the crime, as poaching is a serious issue in the country. “It is also a very prevalent crime and the community expects the court to treat such cases with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.
Feng (33) accepted the fine after the prosecution and his lawyers reached an agreement with Schnetler mentioning his admission of guilt as a “sign of remorse on his part”.
