Murdered Bryanston couple remembered by friends, family

JOBURG - Friends, family and colleagues gathered at His People’s Church to commemorate and celebrate the lives of Wamukelwe Zuma Memela and his wife, Wendy Campbell.

The two were found murdered in their bedroom in Bryanston by a relative.

One colleague, Bridgette Burnett, could barely hold back her tears as she spoke fondly of Campbell during her time at Nedbank.

“Wendy was a bright, energetic person whose commitment to her work and family will be sorely missed,” she said. Burnett spoke fondly of Campbell and said how well she fitted in at work and how much the company would miss.

A high school friend of Campbell’s, Mamokhete Qangule, echoed those words and spoke of her passion, smile and dedication to those she loved. She also commented on the relationship shared by Campbell and Memela, saying it was a unique one.

Mduduzi Mbatha Memela, brother to the slain chef, reflected on the couple, describing both of them as “two people who lived their lives with a purpose and as an example of the perfect couple”.

Also present at the sombre occasion was Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, who expressed his heartfelt condolences to both families. He also stressed the reality of violent crimes and how close to home they hit.

“As a community, we must confront issues of violent crimes and work together with the police to put an end to them,” he said.

“These people who commit such heinous crimes live among us and in our communities and we must work together to deal with this.”

The memorial service took place in Parktown North and began at 5.30pm with the funeral service set to take place at the Kliprivier Berg Recreation Centre in Kibbler Park on 24 January at 8am.

Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Doniah Mothutsane, commented that no new developments had taken place with regards to the case.

“Since the car was recovered, no arrests have been made but the police are still investigating,” she said.
