This after a video depicting a smash and grab incident along Witkoppen Road near the Cambridge Road intersection went viral on 15 January.
A smash and grab can happen anywhere, but the Sandton police have noticed numerous tactics that the culprits use.
Spokesperson for the Sandton police Captain Kym Cloete said most smash and grabs occurred in peak hour traffic when the victim’s car is at a standstill making the driver vulnerable to this crime.
She advises motorist to keep their valuables out of sight giving the would-be assailant nothing to steal. Motorists should leave a considerable amount of space between the car in front of them as it would give the driver manoeuvrability to drive away if a suspicious character approaches their vehicle.
Motorists should report any suspicious characters to the nearest authorities.
The following intersections are where the most smash and grabs take place:
- Witkoppen and Cambridge roads
- Witkoppen Road and Maxwell Drive
- Maxwell and Woodmead drives
- Woodmead Drive (R55) and N1 interchange
- Main Road and Sloane Street
