Criminal activities at licensing centre

JOBURG - Ward councillor for Ward 102, David Potter voiced his disgust over the bribery issues at Randburg and other licence renewal centres across the city.

Potter said, “What is unacceptable is that Metro police know about the issues and do nothing about it. They just seem to say ‘it is the norm’. Never mind the negative perception it causes [with] the public.

“On [5 January] I saw on Twitter that there were issues at Randburg with the queue and these ‘runners’. I went on [6 January] and as I got out my car I was offered ‘assistance’ to jump the queue. For R650 they would have brought the papers to my car to complete.”

He said he didn’t proceed but went to the queue and chatted with many of those in the queue, most of whom had had offers of ‘assistance’.

Potter said it was unacceptable that criminal activities were happening on council property. “These runners are operating from inside private council land. Metro police responded, but their usual ‘quick fix’ will happen, which is never sustainable. Not much this city does is sustainable,” Potter added.

In his response, Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar said Metro police had been made aware last week of touts who were harassing people inside municipal-owned property.

Minnaar said Metro officers were put on duty in the parking area to see that touts did not operate from the parking area. He added, “I want to warn members of the public not to trust strangers with personal documents such as ID books or cards and driving licences, as it can be used for criminal purposes without the individual being aware of it until it is too late.”
