JOBURG – Following the recent attack on a cyclist, the police have issued tips for cyclists to minimise their chances of being victims of crime.
Speaking on behalf of the Midrand Police Station, head of communications, Constable Matome Tlamela said, “Cyclists are always advised not to ride alone. It is better to go cycling as a group, because when you are alone you become an easy target for criminals.”
• Be aware and ride safely.
• Pay attention to your surroundings. Know the bike paths and roads. Maps are available for bike routes and bike lanes throughout the town.
• Avoid distractions such as headphones and music.
• Wear an approved helmet.
• Prepare yourself and your bike. Know what is required to comply with the rules of the road. For example, ensure your bike has a bell and appropriate working lights and reflectors.
• Be visible by dressing in bright and reflective clothes.
• When using bike routes, dismount your bike when crossing intersections. When in the crosswalk, cyclists become pedestrians. Look both ways and ensure all vehicles stop before proceeding across the road.
• When using bike paths, stay to the right hand side of the path and be aware of other cyclists and pedestrians. Be courteous and use your bell to indicate your intention to pass.
• Look around and note your environment. Vehicles may not see you, so do not assume you have the right of way even if you are entitled to it.
• Carry a form of identification while riding. In case of emergency, this may save your life.
• Be prepared for sudden weather changes. Dress in layered clothing and bring water.
• Always secure your bike to a heavy, non-moving object, even if you are leaving the bike alone for a minute. Theft happens; it does not have to happen to you.
“Your best weapon is your brain. Use common sense, imagination and good judgment,” said Tlamela.
