Motorists warned following man’s battle with robbers

SANDTON - Metro police issued a stern warning to motorists about keeping valuables in their car.

This follows an incident in Sandton where a motorist was involved in a smash-and-grab incident. According to Metro spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the incident took place on the Grayston Drive off-ramp at about 4.30pm when two suspects spotted the victim’s wallet in the car.

“The suspects proceeded to open the passenger door and as they took the wallet, the motorist stopped the car and wrestled with the one suspect for the wallet,” he said.

Minnaar added that two Metro police officers saw the incident and fortunately were able to assist the victim and arrest the suspects. He cautioned motorists not to keep valuable items visible in the car as they could be seen by criminals.

“Also, do not get involved in a tussle with thieves when they are taking your valuables as they may have firearms or weapons in their possession,” he said.

He urged motorists to rather report the incident to the Metro police or police officers.
