St David’s Marist Inanda under fire for fireworks

INANDA - St David's Marist Inanda has been accused of disturbing the peace after their nightfever fireworks event.

Concerned resident, Andrew McMurray said he was shocked and disgusted by the school. He said, “As an institution based on religious and educational founding, I find it morally reprehensible that they deem it necessary to hold a fireworks display as a fundraiser for the school. What a way to educate the pupils.”

McMurray added that residents in the area complained about numerous complaints of massive bangs which allegedly rattled windows of houses in and around the area. He is most upset that the school allegedly did not warn residents about their event. “At least with Guy Fawkes Day and Diwali, people could prepare their animals for the total onslaught while the school carried on with no warning,” he said.

Mike Greeff on behalf of the school apologised for the disturbance caused during the event. “We respect the valid opinions expressed and these will certainly be taken into account.” Greeff added that the event was fully approved by the Johannesburg Operations Committee and that the school was fully compliant in all respects of the regulations.

The City of Johannesburg’s bylaws allow for fireworks to be used. However, fireworks are only allowed on certain days and at certain times.

“We recognise that the main concerns expressed are not issues of compliance, but rather of morality and we take these very seriously,” explained Greeff. “We value the support of our community and such events are intended to strengthen, not weaken or divide, community sentiment.”
