Alleged attempted fraud at Eskom

SUNNINGHILL - It has been reported that the Hawks believe that they are dealing with a syndicate following the arrest of two Eskom employees who attempted to defraud its utility.

Reports said the two suspects were arrested along with an accomplice during a sting operation over the weekend following a two-month investigation.

Reports say that the pair had impeded with Eskom’s payroll system in an attempt to steal approximately R3 billion.

Eskom spokesperson Sipho Neke said the case is currently in the hands of the police.

In reports, spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Paul Ramaloko confirmed that they believe there might be a syndicate behind the fraud. He is quoted as saying, “We believe that the three are part of a bigger syndicate which attempted to defraud Eskom. Our investigations are continuing. We’re not sure if more suspects will be arrested or not.”
