City orders removal of Cell C banner

JOBURG - In an on-going saga, The City of Johannesburg has ordered that the Cell C banner placed at WorldWear mall be removed.

This according to Nthatise Modingoane, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, who said the controversial banner was in contravention of the Outdoor Advertising bylaws.

“According to these bylaws, there has to be an application made to the City for a banner to go up, which the City did not receive,” he said.

Modingoane added that the City had issued a contravention notice to the owner of the property, instructing him to remove the banner within a certain number days or else a legal process would take place in which the matter would be taken to court.

The banner was put up by George Prokas and slammed the network company’s Sandton City store for poor service.

Cell C then launched an application for an interdict, which was dismissed by Judge Sharise Weiner at the South Gauteng High Court.

Spokesperson for Cell C, Vinnie Santu, commented, “Once the banner was erected, and prior to bringing the court application, Cell C notified the City of Johannesburg and requested that it intervene on the basis that the banner breaches certain Outdoor Advertising bylaws of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.”

The city gave WorldWear seven days to remove the controversial banner.
