Man hit by car on M1 and flung into ditch

MARLBORO - A man was killed after a car collided with him on the M1 highway near Marlboro at around 4pm on 15 November.

Crisis communicator for ER24 Russel Meiring said the man, believed to be in his fifties, had stopped at the side of the M1 near the Marlboro offramp to help another motorist whose car had broken down.

Meiring said that when paramedics arrived on the scene they found the man lying in a ditch next to the highway.

“The man whose car broke down explained that while he was being helped another vehicle came passed in the far left hand lane and collided with the man, throwing him over the vehicle and into the ditch. When paramedics assessed the man they found that he showed no signs of life and initiated CPR. Despite their efforts he showed no positive signs of life and was later declared dead on scene,” said Meiring. The motorist who hit the man did not stop and drove away from the scene.

He said it was believed that another motorist and his family stopped to help moments before the collision occurred.

“Everyone on scene were clearly shocked about what had happened,” said Meiring.

Meiring said the police were investigating the matter.
