Sandton bids farewell to Strauss ahead of Miss World pageant

SANDTON - The Maslow Hotel was filled to brim as former beauties and members of the public came to bid Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, farewell.

The beauty is preparing to leave for the Miss World pageant set to take place in London on 14 December.

The farewell also saw a preview of the opening ceremony gown Strauss, as well as her national costume in honour of the late iconic leader, Nelson Mandela.

Present at the farewell was Suzette van der Merwe, executive: commercial communications for Cell C, who expressed admiration of Strauss ahead of her departure.

“Cell C is extremely proud of Strauss and the work she has done during her term, we are confident that she will do well at the pageant,” she said.

She also explained why working with her had been a wonderful experience, saying Strauss had been a role model by being compassionate.

Van der Merwe, herself a former Miss South Africa, explained the brand’s involvement in the pageant, having been a sponsor for a year.

“The Miss SA pageant is perfectly aligned to our brand and is the perfect platform to promote women and encourage young people along the right path,” she said.

Strauss expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the nation abroad.

“I am who I am today because of South Africa and the opportunities I have been given. Now is the time to represent our beautiful country for what we really are – cultural, diverse, caring and full of hope,” she said.

Two of her gowns were created by Bloemfontein-designer Casper Bosman, while the national costume, with an image of the late Nelson Mandela, was designed by students from the Cape Town College of Fashion Design.

The farewell took place on 5 November from 10.30am.
